HSE Students Want to Install a Personalized Bench and Organize a Charity Fair on Myasnitskaya

On September 2nd, 2015, Myasnitskaya street, which hosts several HSE buildings, was officially opened after reconstruction. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin inspected the renewed street and talked to HSE students.

The mayor had previously met with HSE students in January 2015. Then they already talked about the reconstruction of Myasnitskaya. Sobyanin reminded the students about that talk and inquired whether they liked the street after the renoveation. ‘The city centre is transforming, and it is very pleasant’, said Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov expressing the joint opinion.

‘What we have here in the historical centre is a real university cluster: it includes educational institutions, cafes and shops’, one of the students said. She asked the mayor to support HSE’s idea to carry out a charity fair on Myasnitskaya on January 25, a national students’ holiday. ‘This is a good idea, and I support it. We’ll help you organize this’, Sobyanin promised.

HSE graduates also suggested installing a bench on Myasnitskaya street with a sign ‘from HSE graduates to Moscow city’, which would become a meeting point for former and current students of the university. Yaroslav Kuzminov added that the students are going to have the bench manufactured at their own expense. ‘We have 50,000 graduates already, so if all of them chip in together, we’ll be able to install a bench every month’, he said. ‘Speaking about the bench, no problem, you can participate in improving the city’, the mayor answered.

One more proposal was about a crow – the HSE symbol. The students suggested placing a model of the bird on one of the lampposts. Yaroslav Kuzminov noticed that there is a School of Design at HSE, which could develop the model of the lamppost crow. ‘I like this idea’, Sergey Sobyanin said.

In conclusion, the students told the mayor that they would like to see more trees on Myasnitskaya. According to Sobyanin, several dozen bushes and trees will be planted on the street.

Reconstruction of Myasnitskaya street started in April 2015. As part of the work, the road was narrowed from four to two lanes, pavements were widened, and 76 parking places were established. Illegal billboards were taken down, and lamps, rubbish bins, and benches were installed.

HSE venues are located on Myasnitskaya street in buildings 9/11, 18, 20, 24, and 40.

Muscovites Attached to Their Region

Muscovites who live between the capital’s Ring Road and the Third Ring Road are rooted in their region and, contrary to popular myths, do not try to move into the city centre. In their view, ‘Old Moscow’ is more a territory for rest than a business and residential area. This stereotype is also supported by Moscow’s radial ring structure, which is designed to regulate the influx of people into the city centre, Alexey Levinson  said in HSE’s ‘Demoscope Weekly’ journal.
