Campus news at HSE University

On September 12th, Urban Fest was held at HSE University. Students, staff and guests of the HSE University learned what revitalization means in the context of urbanism and why every conscious citizen should delve into this process. The participants immersed themselves in the study of the urban environment, listened to lectures from experts and visited a fair of HSE student organisations.

In early September, Stanislav Korchagin, winner of the third prize in the 17th International Tchaikovsky Competition, gave a concert at the Small Hall of the HSE Cultural Centre. The event opened the new season by HSE Centre of Music Projects.

On September 4, the HSE University building on Pokrovsky Bulvar hosted ARTificial Fest, an event devoted to neural network art. The festival was organised by the HSE University Faculty of Creative Industries, the HSE Career centre, and the Chisty List (‘Blank Page’) student organisation. The event was open not only to students and staff of HSE University, but also to anyone interested in the blending of machine algorithms and art.

This year, Angelina Yudina graduated from the Bachelor’s in Business Informatics at HSE University and enrolled in the Master’s in Economics and Economic Policy. She has also worked as a research assistant at the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis since May 2021. In her interview, Angelina spoke about her role and responsibilities as a research intern, the personal and professional skills she has developed, and her plans for the future.

Every year, winners of school olympiads make up a significant cohort of the first-year undergraduate students. Such young people are distinguished not only by their deep subject knowledge, but also by a broad outlook, and a strong desire to be part of university life in all its diversity. HSE News Service asked prospective first-year students who received 100 points on the Unified State Exam and the winners of various olympiads what helped them to get enrolled and why they chose HSE University.

HSE University Rector Nikita Anisimov has congratulated students, teachers, and staff on Knowledge Day, which marks the beginning of the new academic year and is celebrated in Russia on September 1. ‘This day marks the new opportunities that open up to us and calls us to climb the most unreachable heights,’ he said.

The CubeSX-HSE-3 satellite, created by staff and students of HSE MIEM and based on the OrbiCraft-Pro 3U platform developed by the SPUTNIX private space company, was launched into low-Earth orbit in June. It is the third research vehicle developed at HSE University as part of the SPACE-π project. The HSE University team plans to launch another spacecraft in December 2023 and in the future, it plans to launch two CubeSats into orbit per year. Behrang Kamali-Shahdadi, from Iran, recently joined the HSE University Department of Theoretical Economics as an assistant professor and will start teaching courses in autumn 2023. In his interview, he shares his experiences of getting a PhD from an Ivy League university, working at a new university in Iran, and his research on matching attorneys to poor defendants, unskilled workers to firms, and baby boomers to universities.
