‘Studying in Russia is the Most Important Decision of My Life’

HSE University attracts a large number of international students from across the world who study both on-campus and remotely. Yuan Bo, student of the programme ‘Strategic Management in Logistics’, tells the HSE News Service about the reasons for his choice and why time management is the key to successful self-development.

The Choice

I chose Russia because I am interested in Russian language and culture. Studying in Russia is the most important decision of my life. I have been to Moscow, but I prefer St Petersburg—I like the local people, culture and the atmosphere in the city.

First, I studied on a bachelor's programme in Business Informatics at the Polytechnic University. Back then, I was already interested in logistics and supply chain management. That is why I decided to apply to the master’s programme ‘Strategic Management in Logistics’ at HSE university as soon as I saw it. Moreover, relations between Russia and China in the sphere of logistics and supply chain management will only develop. In addition, during my first years in St Petersburg I noticed how rapidly this university was growing, and now HSE University-St Petersburg is one of the best universities in Russia.

Studies

The programme curriculum is very interesting and the lecturers are patient and professional. I enjoy their classes

For example, ‘Customs Operations in Global Supply Chains’ is a really useful discipline for future career development. The lectures within the course ‘Strategies in Management: Logistics Digitalization Strategies’ were of interest to me in terms of academic research. I have not yet decided on the topic of my thesis, but the most interesting thing for me is international supply chains, digital logistics and strategic management of procurement.

High grades in my bachelor's degree and recommendations from my previous academic supervisor helped me to get a Chinese government scholarship, which supported me during my master’s studies in the 2021/22 academic year. My good academic performance helped me to become a member of the Chinese Association of Doctoral Students in St Petersburg, which unites outstanding Chinese master's and doctoral students with the support of the General Consulate of China. It is a sort of student council under the Consulate which coordinates Chinese students in St Petersburg and the Chinese student union, and helps to organise various scientific debates, meetings and other events.

Work and Career Prospects

As master's students usually have classes in the evening, they have a chance to develop in both studies and work. I managed to find a job at a Russian company in the foreign trade activity unit (procurement and logistics). Yes, it is hard, but you will not regret it. I have no doubt that such an experience brings great changes which are very helpful in life.

Now the international environment is complicated and unstable, which affects my work sphere a lot. On the other hand, the Russian-Chinese partnership provides great prospects for my career

I am planning to go back to China and work in international logistics or trade activity, though for me, working in Russia in the framework of partnership is a good option too. If I have a chance, I would also like to apply to a doctoral programme.

Student Life

HSE is an international family for me. I have many friends among the Russian and international students, and we have an unforgettable time together

There are many interesting and impressive clubs at the university. For instance, there is an ESN club for foreigners, a film lovers club which helps you learn more about Russian culture and life, and a language club for communication and language practice.

I was provided a place in a dormitory with good conditions. Everything was nice and comfortable. The dormitory heads were very kind and my neighbours are extremely friendly.

Time Management

I have a very busy and interesting life. The company I work for does not give me strict deadlines as I am a student. Moreover, the work is not hard and is interesting, so I do not get too tired of it.

I learn a lot from the working process and then I learn even more after work at university

I watch films, play the guitar and chess, walk in the parks and do sport to relax. I think the most important thing in terms of time management is to make the most of daytime and not to stay up late. If you don't spend too much time on unhealthy pastimes, then you will have enough time for everything. I am sure that time management and self-control influence your success. I like the way I grow at HSE University.
