‘Online Programmes Are Part of HSE’s Large Educational Environment’
HSE University has held an Open Day of online bachelor's and master's programmes created by leading HSE scholars, business leaders, and key players in digital industry. Six of the 17 programmes are appearing in the online education market for the first time.
HSE University has been setting trends in online education for 10 years, sharing unique expert experience in providing high-quality academic education in a digital format—without geographical boundaries or on-campus classes. Today, HSE University offers the largest number of fully online bachelor's and master's programmes in Russia.

Julia Remezova
Highlighting HSE's leading positions in the field of online education, Yulia Remezova, Director for e-Learning at HSE University, stressed: ‘HSE is one of the leading digital universities in the world. Our developments and technologies allow us to structure the educational process from scratch: create digital content, include courses in curricula, assist students and check the acquired material. The quality of HSE online education is highly appreciated not only by the expert community, but also by students. The average rating of online courses is 4.7 out of 5.
More than 6 million subscribers in the world
We are co-founders of the National Open Education Platform, and this summer we are creating a new educational platform with VK based on Skillbox technologies, which will allow students to access more than a hundred online university courses, subscribe to them, and obtain certificates. More than six million subscribers from around the world have chosen our courses. And we keep on developing: since 2020, we have shifted focus to the introduction of full-fledged online degree programmes.’

In total, there are 17 unique online programmes in HSE University’s educational portfolio: 4 bachelor's and 13 master's programmes. HSE was the first Russian university to introduce an online master's degree on an international platform at the beginning of 2020.
The launch of the ‘Master of Data Science’ programme was a digital breakthrough in the Russian online education market. In September 2021, HSE University introduced four more English-language programmes: Computer Vision, Finance, Business Analytics, and Applied Social Psychology.
The university also successfully implements Russian-language programmes with a focus on design, computer science, economics, marketing management, machine learning, and digital product management.
Digital Success
HSE University students and graduates enter the labour market with high salary expectations, which are met. According to the Centre for Institutional Research, 83% of graduates feel competitive in the labour market, and the same percentage of respondents work in a field related to their major. The employment rate of HSE University students at the time of graduation is 96%. HSE online programmes take into account the prospective demands of the labour market and allow students to master competencies that will be in demand tomorrow.
Sergey Roshchin
‘Online programmes can be of interest both to former school students and to graduates with work experience who want to improve their competencies in response to developing technologies, business processes, and institutional dynamics,’ says HSE Vice Rector Sergey Roshchin.
During training, students meet with industry experts in master classes, seminars, applied research activities, and business laboratories.
Students from different countries actively communicate and solve tasks in groups: solving cases, preparing presentations, and discussing joint projects.
Interactive workshops provide an opportunity to solve business problems from renowned market players, and internships from top employers allow students to upgrade the most in-demand competencies. Thus, you can quickly develop in your profession.
Online Rights
Sergey Roshchin adds that online students get access to the university's various information resources, as well as the opportunity to interact with HSE teachers, staff, researchers, and analysts: ‘This fundamentally distinguishes HSE University’s online programmes from those developed elsewhere. Online programmes are part of HSE’s large educational environment.’
Elena Guseva
‘Online students have the same rights and responsibilities as those in offline programmes. They can take part in educational and extracurricular activities online (webinars, project work, internship, meetings with employers and experts), they have access to HSE e-library resources and student mobility programmes. They also receive a student ID and a deferment from conscripted military service while studying at the university. There is another important thing: the diplomas awarded to online students are no different from those received by graduates of offline programmes,’ says Elena Guseva, Head of Online Degree Project at the HSE e-Learning Office.
HSE University's online programmes are fee-paying because the best experts and leaders of the academic community are involved in their implementation, and technological support for digital products requires significant resources. To make online education accessible to the largest audience possible, many programmes offer discounts and targeted loans.
