International Students Ready to Study in Russian
On June 27, the first cohort of HSE Preparatory Year graduates received their diplomas after passing the exams. Launched in 2015, the programme offers international students an excellent opportunity to develop their Russian language skills and prepare for Russian-taught programmes at HSE and other Russian universities. This year, approximately 90 people from over 30 countries studied in the programme, which included several tracks – economics, humanities and science.
International Summer School on Higher Education Research
The IV International Summer School on Higher Education Research, which was devoted to ‘Higher Education, Society and State’, was held June 4-10 in St. Petersburg. Organized jointly with the China Institute for Educational Finance Research at Peking University, the Summer School brings together senior and junior scholars in the field of higher education research; it aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas, enhance research quality, and foster the integration of early-career researchers into the international academic community.
The Mission of New Universities
On May 19-21, St. Petersburg hosted the third International Conference on Education and Global Cities: Horizons for the Contemporary University. The conference saw the participation of representatives from universities in Hong Kong, Torino, Newcastle, Beijing, Oslo, Brussels, and beyond. It also featured more than 20 plenary sessions, round tables, lectures, and seminars.
International Conference ‘Modes of Thinking, Ways of Speaking’
An international conference ‘Modes of Thinking, Ways of Speaking’ took place at HSE. The event was organized by the HSE Faculty of Humanities School of Philosophy and brought together not only professors and young researchers, but also undergraduate and master’s students.
International Criminal Moot Court 2016
On April 28 th and 29 th , 2016, an International Criminal Moot Court took place at the HSE Faculty of Law. A moot is an imitation of a procedure at the International Criminal Court, where students represent sides of the process (the prosecutor, the representatives of the aggrieved side and the accused country), and the judges are invited lawyers from Russia and European countries.
HSE Professor’s Biography on Stalin Wins PROSE Award
The book Stalin: New Biography of a Dictator by Oleg Khlevniuk has won the 2016 PROSE Award in the Biography and Autobiography category. Khlevniuk is a Leading Research Fellow in the HSE International Centre for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences.
Young Academics Meet Henry Kissinger in Seminar at HSE
On 5th February, American diplomat and political scientist Henry Kissinger visited the HSE Faculty of World Economics and International Affairs. On Kissinger’s initiative the meeting was organised as a seminar for a dozen or so of the brightest young academics at HSE, MGIMO and RAS institutes. The best master’s students were also invited. The event was chaired by Sergey Karaganov, Dean of the Faculty.
New International Students Arrive at HSE
HSE’s family of international students grew even larger in January when over 50 students arrived to study for the duration of the spring semester. They come from all over the world — Europe, Asia, North America, and even the Caribbean.
Cultural Cafe Takes Place at HSE
On 4th December the International Students Office at HSE Moscow held the first Cultural Cafe evening, a project to broaden cultural exchange between HSE students from different countries. A similar initative was launched at HSE Nizhny Novgorod earlier this year. It’s all taking place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Students from Ghana, Indonesia, China, Nigeria and Uganda made their presentations at the first event and talked about different aspects and traditions of culture in their countries from historical facts to national dishes.
‘It Is Important for Us to Turn HSE into a World-class Research University’
On December 7, the sixth meeting of the HSE International Advisory Committee opened with leading experts from around the world in the field of science and education coming together to discuss the university’s achievements and the challenges it faces, as well as its objectives for the coming years. Following two days of discussions, the committee members will form recommendations on changes to the primary areas of development.
