Student for a Day: HSE University Holds Open House
A university-wide open day for undergraduate and specialist applicants took place at HSE building on Pokrovsky Bulvar on March 3. In one day, applicants and their parents got acquainted with HSE University campuses, faculties, degree programmes and pre-university projects. Faculty and staff, as well as HSE students, spoke about the admission process, studies, and the prospects for university graduates.
Representatives of the Admissions Office spoke about the specifics of enrolment in 2024, the deadlines for application, admission trajectories, and discounts on fee-paying tuition. Applicants and their parents communicated with representatives of HSE departments and projects in the atrium and attended meetings in classrooms.
The concept of the open day allowed each guest to became an HSE student for one day. The participants registered in advance and received ‘grade books’ in which the teachers put marks for master classes, lectures and workshops. In the end of the event the participants received ‘electronic diplomas’, and the most active ones were awarded with prizes.
How to Enrol in HSE Programmes
The university-wide open day started with an official welcoming speech by representatives of the HSE Admissions Office at the Cultural Centre. Kirill Kuptsov, Head of the Admissions Office, spoke about the documents required for application, HSE degree programmes, and the features of the admission process at the university.
Study Atmosphere, Gifts and Quizzes
Throughout the day, stands of faculties and student organisations worked in the central atrium of HSE University, where applicants and their parents could find all necessary information and ask questions to the faculty representatives.
Ekaterina Abramova, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Pre-University Training, notes that the faculty aims to make sure that future applicants feel the academic atmosphere at HSE University and get used to the educational system in advance.
The stand of the Faculty of Computer Science featured a win-win lottery for the faculty subscribers in social networks. University merchandise, including thermal mugs, umbrellas, and bracelets, was given out as prizes. The participants could also play tangram—assembling an image from geometric shapes—and receive a prize.
According to Ivan Ivanov, manager of the FCS Applicants, Students and Alumni Unit, the visitors inquired about the faculty life in detail: what time classes start, if there is a lot of homework, if teachers are demanding, and so on.
The Faculty of Mathematics also offered puzzles and other tasks. Future applicants not only learned about the faculty programmes, but also engaged in discussions on professional topics.
At the stand of the Faculty of Geography and Geoinformation Technology, 2nd-year students Oleg Malyuta and Anna Chugaeva demonstrated a collection of minerals as well as a total station—a geodetic tool for measuring distances, horizontal and vertical angles. All visitors could take a photo with this device.
At the stand of the Department of Physical Training, each visitor could participate in outdoor games, practice modern sword fighting, or rather, its imitation, in which there is no risk of injuring a partner.
Tea Ceremony and Community Building
The open day participants had an opportunity to communicate with students who shared their learning experience at HSE University. Representatives of student organisations spoke about extracurricular activities, how they got enrolled at HSE University, their studies and the challenges they face.
Visitors of the HSE Chinese Club stand could take part in a tea ceremony. ‘The first brew is always given to the tea deity—its statuette must be present at the ceremony,’ explains Sofia Lyubitskaya, 1st-year student of the Asian and African Studies programme.
Those who wanted to immerse in the university atmosphere could take part in interactive events, including lectures and master classes.
Events for teachers were one of the innovations of this year's open day. Deputy Vice Rector Kirill Sorvin held a meeting with potential participants of the HSE Faculty Partner Teacher project. The project is now being implemented at the Faculty of Social Sciences, and in the near future, four more HSE departments will join it: the Faculty of Computer Science, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Economic Sciences, and the School of Foreign Languages.
Four Cities and an Online Environment
HSE University campuses prepared their own programme. Representatives of the Faculty of Humanities of the HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod told the participants how a word can acquire different meanings and provoke different reactions from interlocutors. At the TED lecture, representatives of the St Petersburg School of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science discussed the use of data analysis in various industries. At the lecture by the Institute of Asian and African Studies of the HSE University in St Petersburg, the applicants learnt about the use of analytical and generative AI in Asian studies.
The HSE online campus also took part in the open day. This year, HSE Online opened admissions to five bachelor's programmes, two of which are new. Elena Guseva, Head of the Support Unit for Online Projects, explained why higher education in online format is as complete as traditional on-site education and what makes it effective.
Applicants and their parents who couldn’t attend the open day can take part in the HSE Admissions Office webinar on March 17. Representatives of all campuses will talk about the admission procedure in 2024 and answer questions.
